No Sweat: The Dad's Guide to How to Dress to Stay Cool This Summer

Need help staying cool this summer?

As a dad, I've gotta stay ready for a variety of activities in the summer. One minute the dog needs a walk. The next minute a kid wants to play in the driveway. After that, it's back inside for a Microsoft Teams call. Then it's out the door to Target to get last-minute items for summer camp.

Perhaps you can relate.

Let's be clear: those are all good things, but unless you're okay looking damp like Matthew McConaughey in A Time to Kill, it's important to make style choices that keep you cool and comfortable.

So what's the answer? Easy...never go outside ever, and keep the AC set at 68.

But that's not very practical.

I think staying cool in the summer boils down to three factors:

  • fabric

  • fit

  • color

Fabrics to keep you cool during summer

When it comes to staying cool, your choice of fabric is crucial.

The denim and heavier knits that carried you through fall and winter are now your mortal enemies.

Opt for breathable materials like linen, cotton, or a lightweight performance fabric. These fabrics not only provide ventilation but also help to draw away any excess moisture from your skin.

I was a skeptic about linen for a long time, but now that I'm well into my 40s my body can easily recognize how breathable it is compared to other knits.

And don't be scared off by performance fabrics.

My mind always goes to something like this early 2000s look:

And I'm here to tell you: we are NOT doing this.

Fabrics have come so far over the last 20 years that now it's easy to find cool, moisture-wicking fabrics that still give off a classic preppy vibe. A great example is this performance polo from Polo Ralph Lauren:

Wear a loose fit to stay cool

Another trick to staying cool is choosing styles that don’t fit tight to your body.

Remember: airflow is your friend. A more relaxed fit allows for better airflow, enhancing your comfort and helping sweat evaporate faster.

This guy has ZERO airflow working for him:

Stay cool with lighter colors

Another tip is to choose lighter colors that can help minimize sweating.

Dark colors tend to absorb light, while light colors reflect it. To combat the dreaded summer sweat, opt for shades like white, cream, beige, tan, or light blue.

The same goes for shorts and pants. Summer is no time for dark denim, so switch over to a lightweight cotton or linen pant, and if you’re choosing shorts for the golf course, you definitely want a moisture-wicking performance fabric to keep you feeling comfortable and looking put together out there.

We don't want to be this guy:

Here's to a cool, comfortable summer

Now you know how to put comfort on your side without sacrificing style. Choose breathable fabrics. Wear a more relaxed fit. And select colors that repel heat instead of absorbing it.
